Bike Step-up
10-18-09 Bradenton
Jay Gleason's best time was 9.392 at 146.17mph
This being my second outing to the Bradenton Drag Strip, I
used the data from the first trip to improve Jay's best time.

First improvement I made that you can detect from the photo,
the
Akrapovič exhaust system. This system has produced the most horsepower on my
dyno. I love the sound and the performance. The construction is top notch. The
Air Induction System has to be removed and the hoses plugged as part of this
exhaust system improvement. The Bike also has a
Graves EXUP eliminator installed due to the missing EXUP valve.
Next, I ventured out from conventional thinking and
purchased a lower profile slick from
Pingel. The Mickey Thompson (M/T) slick was a little
too tall for my liking. I did a lot of homework and found this Goodyear slick has a lower profile and is also
tubeless. The tire is slightly more narrow than the M/T, but traction did not
become an issue. Jay was in 5th gear when he crossed the finish line with this
tire on.

Next upgrade was a Dual Stage V-Roomy air system. I released a Spy Photo (see
above) of the first proto type. I am under development of this system right now
so I can only say this system will not be topped by any other. There are places
this system makes 10hp over and above a stock air box with the top off.
Next item, a piggyback ECU. I am also currently developing this. I was able to
remove the top speed limit, adjust the YCC-T, and control the V-Roomy DS. I am
still testing timing variations, but I did not have the timing adjusted for this
outing.
Next item was a
DynoJet Power Commander 5. I did not have time to adjust the piggyback ECU
AFR to the degree I already had the PCV adjusted. After Jay's last run, I looked
at the LM-2 data and found the AFR was leaning out after first and second gear.
After some V-Roomy testing at the track, I studied the LM-2 data and discovered
I was building a tad more positive ram air pressure than the stock air box base
as the bikes speed increased. I had built gear dependent maps for gears 1 and 2.
Gears 3 to 5 are pretty much the same. I also adjusted the maps for the new
YCC-T opening rate. The new air intake system demanded the YCC-T change. I had
this roughly close, but I will need to tune this further.
Next item was VP Racing
Fuels MS109 race fuel. It only added about 2-3 rwhp to the bike. I used this
because VP Technical Support recommended it to me. I liked the U4-2 better, but
leaded fuel will damage the wide band O2 sensors. Lee (SmokinZX14) has told me
numerous times to use MR9. Maybe I'll give that a shot next time.
Next item was I performed the
Double D clutch spring improvement.
The rest was all Jay Gleason. No power shifter, no nitrous, no lowering links,
no straps, no putting the rear wheel in the staging lights. Even the horn was
still bolted to the bike. All of these modifications could be installed in a
weekend, therefore, it was a slightly modified V-Max. Albeit, well tuned.
