Air Box Modification

UPDATE! The stock filter rubs the YCC-I stacks if you flip it over. I do not recommend flipping it over and rather you purchase a performance Air Filter!

Below are the charts associated with performing an air box and scoop modification I performed to my bike. The air box modification video is here. I will post the scoop modification video later. It just involves removing the foam rubber pieces from inside the scoop. I also tested some course foam scoop inserts. More later.

Note: Every chart in the table below, Esten and I would completely assemble the air box, scoops and tank cover prior to testing. The filter cover can not be installed over the UFO prototype filter. All test in 4th gear.

Run # Description Chart
2 Completely Stock (Previous Testing day)
3 Baseline run. UFO Cat Sass system, Afterburners with baffles out, Max Tuner and stock air filter. No air box mod.
6 UFO Cat Sass system, Afterburners with baffles out, Max Tuner and prototype air filter. No air box mod.
7 UFO Cat Sass system, Afterburners with baffles out, Max Tuner and prototype air filter. No air box mod. Removed the foam rubber padding stuck to the inside of both Air Scoops with double sided sticky tape. We also zip tied the wires into a smaller bundle
12 UFO Cat Sass system, Afterburners with baffles out, Max Tuner and prototype air filter.  Removed the foam rubber pieces stuck to the inside of both Air Scoops with double sided sticky tape. Air Box opening modified.
23 Bike all stock and air box modified. Air filter turned around. Foam rubber padding removed from inside the scoops. Wires in scoop zip tied into a smaller bundle.

This run had the tank cover off:

10 UFO Cat Sass system, Afterburners with baffles out, Max Tuner and no air filter.  Removed the foam rubber pieces stuck to the inside of both Air Scoops with double sided sticky tape. Air Box opening modified and exposed
11 UFO Cat Sass system, Afterburners with baffles out, Max Tuner and no air filter.  Removed the foam rubber pieces stuck to the inside of both Air Scoops with double sided sticky tape. Air Box opening modified and exposed. *Only run with Race ECU *

For now, I will say this is a good mod for the average rider who intends on buying an aftermarket pipe and fuel adjustment of some sort. The bigger gain is the air filter. The mod slightly helps. I think this mod, a filter and a accompanying fuel adjustment unit on the stock bike should be studied next.  For the real drag racer, there are some things out there that will replace the entire intake system and more than likely make some big gains. The individual filters own there own velocity stack tuned from 7k to 10k seems like a good direction to me. Of course none of these charts are taking  Ram Air into consideration. The scoop mod would strictly be for the dyno numbers in my book. I am willing to bet the stock bike will go a little lean at WOT with a performance air filter. Nothing I have tested yet and I've been wrong before.

Some background to remember:

First off, this story will surprise some people. But this is the truth, with no candy coating, so I hope to just be the messenger here. This is what happened:

Esten Spears was here with me to do some final dyno testing of his bike. His bike has had the Cat Sass exhaust system and Max Tuner installed on it for some time for testing purposes. As everyone is aware, I have been testing numerous products from UFO Performance Products. I was recently shipped a prototype air filter that Jon ask for me to install on Esten Spears's bike to get some numbers from before we removed the exhaust system. I have also been testing the Drag Star system on my bike. I had removed my air box and installed some velocity stacks to test therefore my air box was laying on the table. While dyno testing the prototype air filter on the stock air box, I kept looking at the small opening in the stock air box. I decided I was going to cut the opening out in my box that was laying on the table. If worse come to worse, I could epoxy it back in. When I picked up the air box top, I noticed the removable section where the air filter slides in. I queued up the video camera and shot this video. Please note, in the video I have the prototype air filter (our reason for doing this) and I test it in the charts below. So, that's the story. I have since been made aware there is a new filter kit available from Evoluzione.net designed to fit in this location. I honestly did not know anything about this new mod as part of the kit and I am quite certain no one else had either or it would have received some attention. I may not have been the first to figure this out, but I can't help that I did and was the first to post it.  I would rather roll out the welcome mat for this new product rather than appear to jerk the rug from under it. This is a cheap mod. The easiest way to find a couple of ponies. It appears there is already a fitting option. I would hope the two vendors can merge on this because the charts will show they could complement each other.

3/12/09 Blog entry: I had to do some re-work of the videos from last night before I do the dyno sheets. Someone brought up a good point. I failed to mention not to use a dirty filter for the air box mod. Everyone must realize I do these videos as they happen. They may contain flubs, errors or things I fail to mention. I can't think of everything when I get excited. I have some people that really are hypercritical of everything I do, but it is constructive if it avoids a mistake or misunderstanding that could cause damage. Besides, I really don't consider something "done" until I send out an e-mail to the folks on my list. For testing this, I used a new, well I say new, less than 300 miles on it, filter that I blew clean with compressed air. I am running the prototype UFO air filter for now. Shortly after posting this video last night, I was e-mailed by Ken Zeller of evoluzion.net, inc wherein he states this modification is part of a new kit he is offering. I was oblivious to this being a part of his kit. I had not heard a peep of this mod from anyone, anywhere prior to my discovering it yesterday. Rack it up to two people thinking alike. I will say that Ken had e-mailed me prior to this about possibly testing a new race flow system. As for this mod, I strongly suggest you acquire a performance filter. If Ken has this to offer, then he is ahead of the game. The dyno charts I am about to post will still show the stock air filter is still very restrictive. If you guys promise to not go banana's, I will let you see the charts as I make them today. For now, this is the only working link to that page. Please don't quote anything until I iron out the details. I will make a Blog entry when I have finished and you folks can run with the charts.
