Evoluzione

Throttle Controller

Some time ago, Ken Zeller of Evoluzione Cyclesports sent me a throttle controller to test. I got busy doing some other things and this went on the back burner. The other day I saw this in the shop and felt bad. I had almost forgotten about it. I installed the controller and took a few pictures of the process.

Stock plastic throttle controller compared to the fantastically machined Evoluzione throttle controller.

Comparison of the cable pulls. The stock cable pull is concentric. The Evoluzione cable pull is an eccentric cam.

The install is pretty simple. This is how I did it. Follow the cables from the throttle grip and find the throttle play adjustment.

Slide back the rubber boot. Screw the adjuster completely together. This adds slack to the throttle cabling.

Remove the bar end.

Time to remove the grip. I use my air blower's nozzle to pry the grip away from the sleeve while injecting air into the grip. This sort of blows it free.

Once I have used the air nozzle and air pressure to break the grip free from the tube guide (sleeve), I constrict the air flow from exiting the end of the grip and slip the grip right off. It is easier to inject air from the opposite end (compared to what is pictured) to slip the grip off, as the service manual recommends. It's hard to hold tools and take pictures at the same time!

Once the grip was off, I removed the plastic washer and did not re-use it.

The pic is a little out of order because the grip is still on but once the grip and washer is off, remove the bolts from the housing.

Spread the clam shell housing apart. Remove the cables by pulling all of the cable slack to one side. Lift the cable straight up and while turning the grip to generate more slack, slide the cable end out.

Slide off the stock throttle controller. I applied a little grease to the handlebar to keep everything lubricated.

The new Evoluzione controller is very tight and precise. Maker sure to have it properly aligned and slide it on.

Re-attach the cables in the reverse order they was removed.

The handlebar has an index for the housing. While griping the housing, rotate the housing and feel for the index.

Center the housing on the index and continue to hold it on the index while installing the bolts. Tighten the housing back down.

I re-adjusted the throttle play to about an 1/8" of free play. Now would be a good time to completely cycle the throttle controller with the bike off and make sure everything is working correctly and does not bind.

Some folks may want to skip this step, but I hate a grip that gets loose when I wash the bike. I use a little dab of silicone to keep the grip from getting loose. Don't use anything that will be too permanent or you will end up cutting and scraping off an old grip.

Using a popsicle stick, I apply a little dab of silicone to the inside of the grip. I put a majority of it to the end that slide on first in hopes it will be distributed along the sleeve during installation. I still apply a small amount on the outside end just in case.

I cleaned off the new controller with Acetone to remove any grease and slid the grip back on.

Make sure to clean off any excess silicone before installing the bar end.

Re-install the bar ends. At this point, it would be a good idea to once again fully cycle the throttle controller several times with the bike off and check for binding, slack or excessive play.

Here is the controller installed.

As soon as you twist this for the first time, you will notice a slight decrease in the amount of force required to twist the grip. I have only had a little time in the saddle with the controller installed, but for me the greatest improvement over stock was realized when this throttle tamer was used in concert with a throttle rocker. I suffer from chronic numbing of the hands while riding long distance. I have two tricks I use. First is the very inexpensive throttle rocker and the other is to ride with my two middle fingers resting on the levers. I found this throttle tamer will assist the use of a throttle rocker by providing a larger sweet spot for cruisin'.
