One of the projects I had planned on performing was installing
some diodes from the turn signal circuit to the Shift Light. This would
flash the Shift Light when the turn signal was on and providing a bright
reminder to you that your turn signal was on. From
the drawing supplied by Yamaha, it looked possible. #53 in the drawing is the
Multi-function meter we know as the combination Speedometer and
Tachometer. The drawing identifies # 52 as the Shift Timing Indicator light.
It looked like a wire harness existed between them.
I started looking for the shift light indicator signal by
entering the Setup mode. I entered the shift light brightness setup. While
this was enabled, the shift light was glowing brightly. I probed the # 62
Meter Assembly 2 (display atop the faux tank) for a signal going to
the shift light. I could not find it. I went ahead and dug into
Multi-Function Meter # 53.
It was quite a process to gain access to the
Multi-Function Meter to even open it. When I finally had the
Mutli-Function Meter # 53 (Tach/Speed/Shift) disassembled, I found the
wiring going to the single LED for the Shift Light Indicator. After
probing the LED and the Multi-Function Meters wiring for a signal, I found
no individual shift signal originating from the Meter Assembly # 2. Only a
very active digital communication signal.
After determining the Shift Light Indicator signal was
derived locally, it was going to take disassembling the PCB and some soldering
to go any further. At this point I opted out of making this modification.
The bike is too new to be tearing into the meter. I can still install a
jumbo LED on the bike or buy a turn signal auto-cancel. This mod would be
too much work for anyone to easily perform. So now you know.
